For our theater play that takes place in 1920 I was in charge of making an old gramophone replica.
It didn't need to actualy work, but had to be realistic enough to convince the audience.
I made it by mixing laser cutting and engraving, 3D printing, and more traditional techniques (cardboard, wood marquetry, painting).

Being involved in a theater play that takes place in 1920, we needed an old style camera.
After searching a real one without success, I decided to make our own by combining 3D printing, woodworking and painting.
Here is the result....

After my very good first tests prints on the Weedo Tina2 3D printer, I started to see how I could improve it.
And here are my first hacks and mods.

Printing big objects is something I wanted to do since a long time.
But 3d printing is such a slow process that it discouraged me until now (I have some free spare time).
Still it's important to plan ahead to reduce printing time to a minimum and avoid support structures as much as you can.

Recently Frenchy Pilou (no need to introduce) told me about MagicaVoxel, a free voxel modeler. I was curious so I had a look.
There are people making incredible stuff out of it !
But how does it behave with R3F ?
Can it be useful in the modeling process and how to go from one software to the other ?

Since a few years I have a legendary KORN & MACWAY SERVO-SOUND Cybernetic preamplifier with its 2 active speakers.
But unfortunately I only own one of the 2 proprietary cables so I'm unable to listen to it (or only on 1 of the 2 speakers).
And these cables are nearly impossible to find (I've been searching a lot and never found one).
So I decided to make another one by myself...

A few time ago I've been given an old 3D printer.
This dinosaur is a double-head BfB3000 from Bitsfrombytes.
Let's see if I can revive it...

Yesterday I had some little spare time between two projects so I decided to train myself at using Meshmixer and Sculptris.
I had no precise idea of what to do before I reminded a famous René Magritte painting from 1934 that would be a perfect subject for Meshmixer.
Along with a bit of Sculptris, I thought it should be possible to achieve a good result in a short time.
In just as little as 3 hours of time I had a new sculpture ready to be printed...

On the DesignSpark forum many people are asking why a STEP file is locked and can't be updated when imported in DSMech.
And they are right to think that this is a very bad point !
I completely agree and I hope the developers will allow STEP modifications in future versions. DSMech will gain popularity if they do so !
But there's a solution and it's called SketchUp...
Edited 29/04/2014 : there's a much easier way as mentioned by Didier in the comments. Thanks Didier !

I untitled one of my previous post "DesignSpark Mechanical : the perfect companion to SketchUp".
And I wanted to do another post that would explain which are the most useful tools in "DS Mech" for SketchUppers.
Finally I decided to do it as a tutorial...

Recently Gael uploaded the "Chest" parts for InMoov.
Among all the parts the plexus is made of two parts with the words "InM" and "oov" on them.
To create these parts he used a boolean operation in Blender.
But Blender didn't do a good job and the resulting parts were full of small artifacts and "spikes".
I then contacted Gael to ask him if he wanted me to try to do it better...

DS Mechanical lacks some important tools that his big brother Spaceclaim has.
One of them is the ability to create text and annotations.
Someone on the forum asked about how to carve text in a model in DS Mechanical.
Having a look at the answers given there I was just amazed at how complex the different solutions were...
While it's so simple when using the SketchUp "Text" tool !

I started to test and evaluate how SketchUp and DesignSpark Mechanical can work together.
And as I said in my previous post they seem to work together pretty well.
But during my tests I found out they quiet don't manage groups and components the same way leading in some problems...

The Z homing on a BfB Rapman is insured by an inverted bolt placed at the back of the extruder.
The bolt's head is actioning the Z switch when the bed moves up.
The bed to nozzle distance can be controled by tuning the lenght of that inverted bolt.
But I think it could be made much easier...
